The listing is real and current, not historical. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo runs an M.S. in Psychology whose entire purpose is the California LMFT license — the 2026–2028 catalog describes it as training "master-level clinicians for marriage and family therapy (MFT) licensure in California" and there is no non-clinical track. It is 69 semester units (73 with the thesis option), it admits 16–20 students once a year for fall only, and roughly 40 students are enrolled across all cohorts at any time. That makes it one of the smallest and cheapest routes to the license in the state: a public CSU with a fixed, lockstep, in-person schedule where every course runs once a year. The program is in the middle of converting from quarters to semesters — the shift happened in fall 2026, which is why the course numbers changed from three digits (PSY 520, 555, 569, 576) to four (PSY 5510, 5515, 5586, 5595).

The distinguishing feature is the in-house clinic, not the theory. Cal Poly operates the San Luis Obispo Counseling Service, a department-run community clinic staffed by M.S. students and supervised by licensed psychologists on the faculty, charging county residents $5–$25 a session on a sliding scale. Students see real clients under faculty supervision before they ever leave campus, then move to a four-quarter community traineeship. Curricular content, by contrast, is conventional and BBS-shaped: theories, diagnosis, assessment, group, couples, child/adolescent, substance use, psychopharmacology, law and ethics. The one thread that reads as a genuine commitment rather than a checkbox is culture — PSY 5516 Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling is a standalone required course, and the multicultural lens is written into the catalog descriptions of assessment, diagnosis and the theories course rather than quarantined in one class. If you want a school with a named theoretical identity — depth, somatic, systemic-structural — this is not it. What it offers instead is a small cohort, an on-campus clinic, program-arranged placements, and public-university tuition.

How practicum actually works

Californian clinical training runs in two legally distinct stages, and the difference decides what a program can and cannot do for you.

A trainee is a student. You see clients while still enrolled, at a site your program approves, supervised by someone the site provides. This is practicum, and it is the stage a program controls. An associate — registered with the Board after you graduate — is no longer a student, is usually paid, and is working toward the 3,000 hours the license requires. The Board renamed this stage from “intern” to “associate” in 2018, so any page still saying “MFT intern” is quoting something out of date.

Hours you bank as a trainee count toward the 3,000, up to a limit, which is why the size and quality of a program’s placement matters long after graduation: a student who leaves with 1,000 hours starts the associate years a third of the way through them, and one who leaves with the 225-hour minimum starts at the beginning.

Practicum is also where a degree most often stops being on schedule. Coursework runs on a calendar the school controls; placement does not. The questions that matter are therefore all about who owns the problem of finding you a site — and the answer differs enormously between programs on this list.

The school runs its own training clinic.  SLO Counseling Service (on-campus practicum training clinic) Owning a clinic and holding a seat in it are different things, so this sits beside the model above rather than replacing it.

Clinical work starts on campus, not at an outside agency: students first see clients at the San Luis Obispo Counseling Service, a department-run community clinic serving county residents who don't qualify for county behavioral health or can't afford private therapy, on a $5–$25 sliding scale, staffed by M.S. students and supervised by licensed psychologists in the Psychology and Child Development department. Practicum is capacity-limited — the handbook says only 8 students can enroll in the spring of year one, and everyone else waits until fall of year two — and while in it students get one hour a week of individual supervision from their faculty supervisor plus two hours a week of group supervision, totalling 20 individual and 40 group hours across the practicum. The relational sub-minimum is explicit and unusually early: 15 of the 40 practicum service hours must be couple or family work, and each traineeship term requires a caseload containing at least two families, parent-child pairs and/or couples. Placement for the four-quarter community traineeship is program-run, not student-run — the handbook states that the Traineeship Coordinator arranges placement interviews and that students may only contact agencies the Coordinator has approved. On site, trainees log 15–20 hours a week and receive 10 hours of individual and 20 hours of group supervision per term, with the catalog adding that supervision is 'weekly supervision with on-site and university supervisors.' How its graduates did on the Board’s exam

Counting every attempt rather than only first attempts, the figure is 96% across 105 sittings here, against 66% statewide. First attempts are the fairer comparison — counting resits measures how many tries people needed rather than how many passed, and it penalises a school whose graduates keep going.

On the separate California Law and Ethics exam, 94% of this school’s 132 first-time candidates passed, against 80% statewide.

None of these are answered on a program page, and all five change what the degree is actually worth to you.

What I could not establish

Everything above is sourced. These are the things I looked for and could not establish - take them to admissions, and note how quickly and precisely they answer.

• Cal Poly publishes the required course list but no term-by-term plan of study for the M.S. in Psychology; the 'terms' field is therefore a single required-coursework block.
• No post-semester-conversion student handbook could be found. All practicum and traineeship hour figures come from the 2019–20 handbook, which was written under the quarter system — the structure carried over but the per-term hour counts may have been rescaled for semesters.
• The department's own Course Requirements page still says students 'must successfully complete 90-quarter units,' which contradicts the 69-semester-unit 2026–2028 catalog. The catalog is the authoritative figure; the department page appears not to have been updated after the semester conversion.
• No tuition or total cost figure could be sourced. Cal Poly's public tuition-and-fees pages returned 404s and the department financial aid page lists funding programs without dollar amounts.
• No credible student discussion (Reddit, GradCafe, Student Doctor Network) could be gathered — the research session's web-search budget was exhausted before reviews could be searched, and direct Reddit API access was blocked. 'voices' is therefore empty rather than absent-because-nothing-exists.
• The clinic's own pages describe it as serving the 'Master of Science Psychology Program' and never use the phrase 'MFT'; the link between clinic and MFT training is established from the department graduate page and the handbook rather than from the clinic site itself.
