What this program actually is
OrientationChristian integration (evangelical Anabaptist / Mennonite Brethren) layered over a developmental, model-agnostic clinical curriculum — students must "align with a specific theoretical orientation" and demonstrate competency in one individual and one family therapy approach before practicum.
The MFT program is not housed in a school of psychology or education — it is a degree of Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary, and the required course list makes that concrete rather than decorative. Of the 65 minimum units, 6.5 are Biblical/Theological Studies (BIB 720, BIB 760, THEO 708, THEO 712), and the 12.5-unit "Personal/Social Formation" block adds MIN 709 Spirituality & Wellness, THEO 730 Discipleship and Ethics, and a three-semester COUN 705A/B/C Mentoring in Integration sequence. The capstone is COUN 791A/B, in which every student writes a "Theory and Theology Integration paper that articulates why the student adopts a particular counseling theory and how that theory corresponds with (or challenges) their theological worldview," and the degree ends with COUN 770 Senior Counseling Discernment, a meeting with a group of eight to ten people the student assembles, "representing family, student peers, practicum supervisor, and a pastor or spiritual mentor." Graduates receive a Seminary Integration Certificate alongside the M.A. Two of the nine published program learning outcomes are "Demonstrate commitment to live as a disciple of Jesus in Christian community" and "Articulate commitment to a biblical theological Christian perspective," and admission requires "one spiritual reference from a pastor or other ministry leader (not a family member)." A prospective student who is not a practicing Christian should read that list and take it at face value: this is a confessional program in the Mennonite Brethren tradition (the seminary's own theological witness statement centers conversion, believer's baptism, biblical authority, discipleship, mission and a peace witness), and there is no non-theological pathway through the 65 units. Note the separate question of clients: the university's own Pacific Counseling Center states that its "counselors respect the diversity of our community and welcome clients of all faiths or no faith."
The second real thing about this program is geographic. It sits on the main Fresno campus at 1717 S. Chestnut Ave. and is offered fully on-site there, which makes it one of very few MFT routes serving the Central Valley and the South Valley without a move to the coast. Courses run afternoons and evenings — the Fall 2026 seminary schedule shows COUN sections at 1:25–4:05, 2:50–5:30 and 6:00–8:00, with a common meal between the afternoon and evening blocks — and the handbook is explicit that "students typically take three to five years to complete their degree," with published 3-year and 4-year plans. At $610 per unit for MFT/Counseling in both 2025-26 and 2026-27, the 65 units come to roughly $39,650 in tuition, low for a private program. The access story has a hard edge, though: courses are "generally only taught once per year," a section needs a minimum of 7 students to run, and the handbook warns that placement is "a highly competitive job market, and you will be vying for placements with students from several other schools in the greater Fresno and South Valley areas. If you are unable to secure a Practicum placement, you may be unable to advance to Practicum the following academic year."
Third, the program invests unusually heavily in longitudinal self-examination. Students write a Pathways to Transformation Paper in COUN 724 in their first semester, update it as part of the Trainee-Practicum Assessment portfolio a year or two later, and reference it again in the 6-to-8-page Self-Assessment Reflection for senior discernment. Personal therapy is expected once practicum begins, and the seminary maintains a Therapy Assistance Fund, replenished by contributions from the very agencies where trainees are placed, that reimburses practicum-year therapy costs — but only if your placement site contributes to the fund and you see a therapist from the program's vetted list, which the handbook says students should factor into which placement offer they accept. Faculty can also stop a student who is passing academically: "If a student can maintain academic standards, but faculty are concerned with the student's ability to perform the job duties of a counselor, the student may not be allowed to move forward in the program."

Senior Counseling Discernment
A zero-unit graduation requirement taken in the final practicum semester. The student assembles a discernment group "typically comprised of eight to ten people representing family, student peers, practicum supervisor, and a pastor or spiritual mentor," writes a 6–8 page Self-Assessment Reflection referencing the Pathways to Transformation Paper, and the group discusses "the student's gifts, seminary experience, goals for ministry, and potential places the student's gifts can best be utilized vocationally."catalog ↗
Why it is worth noticingAlmost no California MFT program ends by convening the student's family, peers, supervisor and pastor in one room to talk about the student's readiness. If you are weighing whether a seminary program will feel intrusive, this is the single clearest test case — it is required, it is not academic, and it explicitly includes people from the student's church and family life.
Counseling Individuals Lab
Taken concurrently with COUN 747. "Students enrolled in COUN-747L Counseling Individuals Lab will provide counseling for an individual adult under the supervision of a faculty member. Students will meet for assessment of this experience and evaluation of their work in small supervision groups." The handbook states plainly that "the experience in this course does not meet the requirements for trainee hours and cannot be counted toward licensure."catalog ↗
Why it is worth noticingReal clients, faculty supervision, and none of it counts toward the 3,000 hours — that is a deliberate choice to let students fail safely a year or two before traineeship. It also means FPU students have seen a live adult client before they ever interview at a placement site, which matters in a competitive Fresno placement market.
Counseling Children Lab
A companion lab to COUN 736 Counseling Children that "provides an opportunity for students to work on developing their counseling skills with children. The lab typically requires a commitment of three to four hours per week for the semester in addition to class time." Why it is worth noticingA second required pre-traineeship clinical lab, this one specifically with children — three to four hours a week on top of the class. Very few programs require two separate supervised skills labs before practicum, and fewer still make one of them child-specific.
Cross-Cultural Counseling: Los Angeles / International / Experiential
Beyond the classroom-based COUN 750B Cross-Cultural Counseling: Core Competencies (1.5), every student must also take one of three place-based cross-cultural courses — Los Angeles, International, or Experiential (listed in the handbook as "Experiential or INT" and elsewhere as San Francisco). Why it is worth noticingThe cross-cultural requirement is split into a taught core-competency course plus a mandatory immersion course, which is unusual — most programs discharge multicultural content in a single seminar. It is also one of the few parts of the curriculum that pulls students out of Fresno.

Why it is worth noticingThe integration of faith and clinical practice is not left to a single capstone; it is scaffolded as a small recurring course across the whole degree. That is the structural signature of a seminary-based MFT, and it is the piece most likely to feel either formative or imposed depending on the student.
Integration of Marriage & Family Studies I / II
A two-part capstone taken in the senior year alongside Practicum. "Students will write a Theory and Theology Integration paper that articulates why the student adopts a particular counseling theory and how that theory corresponds with (or challenges) their theological worldview," plus a second paper or project giving "a clinical and theological analysis of, and proposed solution to, a clinical, sociopsychological, or other counseling-related problem" drawn from their practicum. Why it is worth noticingThis is the assessment that decides whether a graduate can articulate a defensible theoretical orientation, and at FPU it is inseparable from theology — the paper has to say how the chosen model corresponds with or challenges the student's own worldview. There is no secular version of this capstone on offer.

What you would actually take, in the order you would take it. Sequences change; check the current catalog before you count on any single term.
65 minimum units. Not a lockstep cohort: students plan with a faculty advisor each semester from a published Degree Program Plan, and "students typically take three to five years to complete their degree" — the seminary publishes both a 3-year and a 4-year recommended sequence. Courses are generally taught once per year and a section needs at least 7 students to run, so sequencing errors cost a full year. Practicum runs on a Fall–Spring cycle, so "students beginning in the Spring Semester will need three and one-half years to complete their program." How practicum actually works
Californian clinical training runs in two legally distinct stages, and the difference decides what a program can and cannot do for you.
A trainee is a student. You see clients while still enrolled, at a site your program approves, supervised by someone the site provides. This is practicum, and it is the stage a program controls. An associate — registered with the Board after you graduate — is no longer a student, is usually paid, and is working toward the 3,000 hours the license requires. The Board renamed this stage from “intern” to “associate” in 2018, so any page still saying “MFT intern” is quoting something out of date.
Hours you bank as a trainee count toward the 3,000, up to a limit, which is why the size and quality of a program’s placement matters long after graduation: a student who leaves with 1,000 hours starts the associate years a third of the way through them, and one who leaves with the 225-hour minimum starts at the beginning.
Practicum is also where a degree most often stops being on schedule. Coursework runs on a calendar the school controls; placement does not. The questions that matter are therefore all about who owns the problem of finding you a site — and the answer differs enormously between programs on this list.

There is an approved-site list and real support, and the seat is still yours to win. Most programs are here and most students manage it. Ask for last year’s numbers rather than the policy: how many students placed on the first round, and how many had to extend.

The school runs its own training clinic. Pacific Counseling Center Owning a clinic and holding a seat in it are different things, so this sits beside the model above rather than replacing it.
Practicum is gated by COUN 764 Trainee/Practicum Assessment, a zero-unit course taken the spring before the practicum year: the student submits a digital portfolio (practicum application, an updated Pathways to Transformation Paper, a theoretical-orientation statement, pragmatic plans for money and self-care, a CV, a cover letter, transcript and course lists, lab-experience statements with graded benchmark assessments from COUN 747L and 736L, a psychosocial narrative report and an integrative paper) and sits a "mini-discernment meeting" with faculty; approval requires at least 18 completed units, "although closer to 50 units is more typical." Students then find their own site: faculty must approve the CV and cover letter before anything is sent out, students apply and interview at approved agencies (a New Practicum Site Request Application is needed for anything off the list, and the university makes the final call), and the handbook is blunt that passing the assessment "does not assure you of being accepted at a practicum site," because FPU trainees compete against students from several other schools across greater Fresno and the South Valley. The placement itself is one or two 9-to-12-month sites at a minimum of 10 direct client contact hours per week, with the agency — not the university — responsible for supervision, and some sites start in May/June and run 12–14 months past the seminary's own calendar, which students are contractually expected to complete. There is no published minimum for relational (couple/family) hours and no total client-hour count: FPU is a BBS-approved program under Business and Professions Code §4980.36 rather than a COAMFTE-accredited one, so it does not carry COAMFTE's relational- and observable-data-hour floors. Alongside the placement, students attend a weekly practicum class and a Counseling Roundtable case-consultation forum, are expected to be in their own personal therapy (with possible reimbursement from the Therapy Assistance Fund if their site contributes to it), and some elect COUN 793C Practicum III for extra experience — voluntarily, or because faculty judge them "not fully prepared for the field of counseling." The trainee-to-associate handoff is explicit but unassisted: the handbook walks students through registering with the BBS for an Associate number after graduation and the remaining 3,000 hours, and COUN 793C exists partly so students can bank additional pre-degree hours toward AAMFT clinical-membership requirements. source ↗
Will this degree travel
Not COAMFTE accredited
That is not a defect — 66 of the 78 institutions on the Board’s list are in the same position, including most of the Cal States, and their graduates license in California every year.
It becomes a problem if you leave. Several states will not accept a non-COAMFTE degree without remedial coursework, and a few will not accept it at all. If there is any chance you move, check the destination board’s rules before you enroll, not after.

How its graduates did on the Board’s exam
Counting every attempt rather than only first attempts, the figure is 90% across 77 sittings here, against 66% statewide. First attempts are the fairer comparison — counting resits measures how many tries people needed rather than how many passed, and it penalises a school whose graduates keep going.
On the separate California Law and Ethics exam, 84% of this school’s 83 first-time candidates passed, against 80% statewide.

What this number is, and what it is not
It describes candidates, not teaching. In 2022 the Council on Social Work Education removed licensing-exam pass rates from its accreditation standards, saying the data “may not be an equitable measure of program outcomes” — after the social-work exam board’s own analysis found first-time pass rates of 84% for white candidates and 45% for Black candidates. A program that enrolls more career-changers and more students of color will post a lower rate while teaching at least as well. The accrediting body with the most reason to want this metric examined it and stopped using it.
The denominator is not this year’s students. These are people who sat the exam during the window, often several years after graduating and sometimes after the program changed shape or owner.
It is published here because it is a real, official figure that is otherwise almost impossible to find — and it is published on this page only. There is no pass-rate column in the directory, nothing is sorted by it, and no school on this site is ranked against another.

What to ask before you apply
None of these are answered on a program page, and all five change what the degree is actually worth to you.
The single question that separates programs. Ask for a list of current sites, and ask plainly whether the program places you or expects you to find your own. A rural or online student unable to find a site cannot graduate.
The Board publishes this by school, so the program cannot be the only source. Ask anyway, and see whether the answer matches.
Per-unit rates move. Multiply by the actual unit count and add campus fees before comparing anything.
The 500 couples-and-families hours are carved out of the 1,750 clinical ones, and they are the category associates most often finish short on. A program placing students in adult individual settings will not generate them.
Sometimes yes, sometimes with extra units, sometimes only in one delivery format. Get it in writing rather than from a brochure.
What I could not establish
Everything above is sourced. These are the things I looked for and could not establish - take them to admissions, and note how quickly and precisely they answer.
- Full catalog course descriptions could not be retrieved. catalog.fresno.edu (the Acalog instance) sits behind an AWS WAF challenge that returns an empty JavaScript challenge page to every non-browser request, so the substance quoted here for individual courses comes from the MFT Program Handbook and the catalog text mirrored on fresno.edu, not from per-course catalog entries. Course titles, codes and unit values are confirmed across three independent sources (handbook, program page, program brochure) and agree.
- Cohort size is not published anywhere reachable. The only inferable data points: seminary sections require a minimum of 7 students to run, and the Fall 2026 schedule lists two sections of COUN 793A Practicum I, both taught by C. McGrady.
- No total client-hour requirement for graduation is published — only a weekly rate (10 direct hours/week). No relational (couple/family) hour minimum is published either; FPU is BBS-approved under BPC §4980.36, not COAMFTE-accredited, so COAMFTE's relational and observable-data floors do not apply.
- Licensure exam pass rates (71% / 100%) are stated on the program page without a cohort year, denominator or source.
- The handbook's degree-requirements list names COUN 759 Psychobiology & Psychopharmacology (0.5) while its own Appendix 2/5/6 plans label the same course COUN 758. The catalog and brochure both use 759; this is almost certainly a typo in the appendices but has not been confirmed with the registrar.
- The handbook lists COUN 750D as 'Cross-Cultural Counseling [Experiential]' and the appendices gloss it as 'SF' (San Francisco), while the program page's catalog text lists COUN 750D as 'Experiential' and COUN 750A as 'Los Angeles'. The destination cities appear to rotate; no current itinerary was found.
- No admissions deadline dates, cohort start dates or acceptance rate are published.
- No Reddit, Student Doctor Network or GradCafe discussion of this specific program was reachable — Reddit's search endpoints and every general web search engine returned bot blocks from this environment. The GradReports reviews quoted above are mostly 2013–2019 and only two are identifiably from MFT or graduate students.
