What this program actually is

Pepperdine is religiously affiliated with the Churches of Christ and says so plainly in its catalog, and GSEP describes its psychology training as delivered "in a Christian, values-centered context." But the MFT curriculum itself is secular clinical training. Read the 2026–27 catalog course list end to end and there is no theology course, no faith-integration course, no chapel or spiritual-formation requirement anywhere in the 60–66 units. The only place religion appears at all is inside PSY 622 Multicultural Counseling, where "spirituality" is listed alongside race, class, sexual orientation and ableness as one multicultural variable among many. If you want a program where a Christian framework shapes case conceptualization, this is not it; if you were worried a religious university would require you to profess something, that worry is misplaced here too. What the affiliation does buy is a mission-statement paragraph and a university culture, not a course.

The bigger thing prospective students get wrong is treating "Pepperdine MFT" as one program. It is three, with different lengths, campuses, admission bars and prices. The Daytime format is 62 units over two academic years (six terms), full-time only, one September start a year, at the Drescher Graduate Campus in Malibu — not West Los Angeles — with a psychology bachelor's preferred, a GRE score or a signed waiver form, a pre-specified lockstep sequence, and four consecutive terms of practicum beginning in the second term. The Evening format is 60–66 units at the Calabasas, Irvine and West Los Angeles graduate campuses, admits three times a year, takes any bachelor's degree (with two waivable foundation courses, PSY 657 and PSY 659, for non-psych majors), can be done part-time, and — the real structural difference — lets you take the core "in any sequence after the necessary prerequisites have been met." The Online format uses the Evening curriculum on four 11-week terms a year and requires a fourth practicum term. Tuition tracks the split: $1,655 per unit at the graduate campuses versus $2,060 per unit at Malibu and online (2026–27), so the Malibu daytime degree costs roughly a quarter more per unit than the same school's evening degree.

The one genuinely uncommon thing in the course list is the Aliento / Latinx Communities emphasis, run out of the Irvine campus. It is not a certificate bolted onto the side: students take Latinx-specific versions of six core courses (PSY 674 diagnosis, 675 assessment, 676 theories, 677 multicultural, 678 techniques, 679 life cycle), two full terms of graded Spanish for clinical work — taught in Spanish, with all assignments in Spanish at the advanced level — an optional summer immersion in a Latin American country carrying a $3,000–$8,000 travel fee, required community service projects with local agencies and church communities, and PSY 663, a bilingual practicum in which "case presentations and case consultations will be conducted bilingually, with an emphasis on Spanish." Very few California MFT programs make Spanish-language clinical competence a graded degree requirement rather than an elective interest.

Pepperdine publishes required course lists but not a term-by-term grid for any format. The Daytime format is lockstep ("students take courses in a pre-specified sequence") over six terms; the Evening/Online core "may be completed in any sequence after the necessary prerequisites have been met," so the Evening student builds their own path. How practicum actually works

Californian clinical training runs in two legally distinct stages, and the difference decides what a program can and cannot do for you.

A trainee is a student. You see clients while still enrolled, at a site your program approves, supervised by someone the site provides. This is practicum, and it is the stage a program controls. An associate — registered with the Board after you graduate — is no longer a student, is usually paid, and is working toward the 3,000 hours the license requires. The Board renamed this stage from “intern” to “associate” in 2018, so any page still saying “MFT intern” is quoting something out of date.

Hours you bank as a trainee count toward the 3,000, up to a limit, which is why the size and quality of a program’s placement matters long after graduation: a student who leaves with 1,000 hours starts the associate years a third of the way through them, and one who leaves with the 225-hour minimum starts at the beginning.

Practicum is also where a degree most often stops being on schedule. Coursework runs on a calendar the school controls; placement does not. The questions that matter are therefore all about who owns the problem of finding you a site — and the answer differs enormously between programs on this list.

What happens after the degree →

Read this twice. The GRE answer depends on format, and the marketing pages contradict the catalog: the Daytime program requires the GRE or a completed waiver form, while the Evening program advertises no standardized tests.

The school runs its own training clinics.  GSEP Community Counseling Clinic – West Los Angeles · GSEP Community Counseling Clinic – Irvine · Pepperdine Telehealth Community Counseling Clinic Owning a clinic and holding a seat in it are different things, so this sits beside the model above rather than replacing it.

The clinical training and professional development staff "regularly visit, evaluate, and approve established and potential sites," and students search via the Experiential Learning Cloud (formerly Tevera) platform with help from their Preparation for Practicum instructor — but the catalog is explicit that the student must obtain the placement: "Students must obtain a placement in an approved clinical setting, with a signed, written agreement on file." For Daytime students the agreement must be in place before the first class meeting of practicum. The Evening clinical training team maintains agency relationships across Southern California; the Online program has its own placement team that recommends and approves sites. How its graduates did on the Board’s exam

Counting every attempt rather than only first attempts, the figure is 78% across 1,424 sittings here, against 66% statewide. First attempts are the fairer comparison — counting resits measures how many tries people needed rather than how many passed, and it penalises a school whose graduates keep going.

On the separate California Law and Ethics exam, 80% of this school’s 1,892 first-time candidates passed, against 80% statewide.

What to ask before you apply

None of these are answered on a program page, and all five change what the degree is actually worth to you.

What I could not establish

Everything above is sourced. These are the things I looked for and could not establish - take them to admissions, and note how quickly and precisely they answer.

• Pepperdine publishes no term-by-term course sequence for any MACLP format — only unit lists. The Daytime format is described as lockstep but the grid itself is not public.
• No cohort size, entering class profile, attrition rate, graduation rate or BBS exam pass rate is published for any format. The 'average class size 25 / 12:1' figure comes from the program marketing page, not a reported statistic.
• Could not confirm that MA (MACLP) students are actually placed at Pepperdine's own Community Counseling Clinics. The clinic pages refer to 'master's- and doctoral-level interns' and 'masters and doctoral students in clinical psychology' without naming the degree programs; the PsyD program is also housed at GSEP.
• The assignment's location string lists the daytime MA at West Los Angeles. The 2026–27 catalog and the daytime program page both place it at the Drescher Graduate Campus in Malibu; West Los Angeles hosts the Evening format and GSEP's headquarters.
• No COAMFTE accreditation — Pepperdine does not claim it anywhere in its materials, and mftcalifornia.com's accreditation roundup lists Pepperdine under WSCUC only. The program is built to California BBS statute (B&P §§4980.36/4980.42) rather than to COAMFTE standards.
• Could not find a public Aliento cohort size, or confirmation of how often the Latin American summer immersion actually runs.
