What this program actually is

Sofia is the direct institutional descendant of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology — the catalog still organizes its degrees under 'The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology' — and the MACP is the only California MFT-qualifying degree in which transpersonal psychology is a separately unit-counted requirement rather than a flavor. Fourteen of the 90–97.5 quarter units sit in a block the catalog calls the Transpersonal Arc: Creative Expression Parts 1 and 2, Clinical Applications of Meditation and Mindfulness Parts 1 and 2, Mind-Body Integration: Aikido A and B, Transpersonal Theory and Literature, a 3-unit Psychosynthesis skills lab, and three further units of Transpersonal Skills Labs chosen along a creative, spiritual or somatic track.
The Aikido requirement is the single most unusual thing here. Two required units of an actual martial art, taught as clinical training: MLR4001/4002 provide 'practical training in maintaining center and awareness under pressure, learning to blend and harmonize with others, and the development of a personal sense of presence', with back and forward rolls learned and practiced. The spiritual-focus skills labs list Holotropic Breathwork, the Enneagram, spiritual emergency/emergence therapy and mindfulness-based CBT and DBT; the somatic labs list Yoga Nidra, Hakomi and Qigong. Around that arc, the clinical core is conventional and BBS-mapped, with a strong systems-theory spine and a practicum sequence in which each quarter is built on a different case-formulation lens — transpersonal, then systems-theory, then evidence-based.
Practically, this is an online, low-residency program with two ten-day intensives a year — one in person in Palo Alto at the start of fall, one virtual-synchronous at the start of spring — which means travel, lodging and an intensive fee on top of tuition. It is cheaper than its private California peers ($62,525 published total charges for on-time 2024 completers, average federal loan debt $16,425 for 2024 graduates) and the cohorts are small (18 students began in 2023, 32 in 2024). But it is also the record in this batch with the most serious public complaints: the sharpest reviews describe high instructor turnover, last-minute schedule changes and a post-COVID loss of the experiential character that was the whole reason to attend. Weigh those against the fact that the transpersonal training itself is genuinely unavailable elsewhere in California.

Why it is worth noticingTwo required units of a martial art in an MFT degree. No other California licensure program asks this. It is the clearest signal of what Sofia means by whole-person training — and a real logistical question, since it has to happen at the in-person intensive.

Why it is worth noticingThis is a smart structural choice and worth noticing: rather than teaching theories in the abstract and then letting students figure out placement, the same clients get reformulated three times through three different lenses. It is also the answer to whether the transpersonal material actually reaches the consulting room.

How practicum actually works
Californian clinical training runs in two legally distinct stages, and the difference decides what a program can and cannot do for you.
A trainee is a student. You see clients while still enrolled, at a site your program approves, supervised by someone the site provides. This is practicum, and it is the stage a program controls. An associate — registered with the Board after you graduate — is no longer a student, is usually paid, and is working toward the 3,000 hours the license requires. The Board renamed this stage from “intern” to “associate” in 2018, so any page still saying “MFT intern” is quoting something out of date.
Hours you bank as a trainee count toward the 3,000, up to a limit, which is why the size and quality of a program’s placement matters long after graduation: a student who leaves with 1,000 hours starts the associate years a third of the way through them, and one who leaves with the 225-hour minimum starts at the beginning.
Practicum is also where a degree most often stops being on schedule. Coursework runs on a calendar the school controls; placement does not. The questions that matter are therefore all about who owns the problem of finding you a site — and the answer differs enormously between programs on this list.

You find your own site
Securing a placement is your responsibility. A student who cannot find a site cannot graduate, and that risk is highest if you are rural, studying online, or need Spanish-language or specialty hours.

Sofia has no training clinic. "All students will need to secure a traineeship position at an approved local site providing mental health services" — in the student's own community, wherever they live, since the program is online. A designated MACP faculty member must approve each site, and students register for a zero-unit Practicum Tracking and Evaluation course alongside the sequence. To advance, students must be in good academic standing, have cleared all practicum prerequisites, have completed 40 hours of personal psychotherapy (20 of them before the sequence starts), and have no outstanding incompletes. Will this degree travel
Not COAMFTE accredited
That is not a defect — 66 of the 78 institutions on the Board’s list are in the same position, including most of the Cal States, and their graduates license in California every year.
It becomes a problem if you leave. Several states will not accept a non-COAMFTE degree without remedial coursework, and a few will not accept it at all. If there is any chance you move, check the destination board’s rules before you enroll, not after.

How its graduates did on the Board’s exam
Counting every attempt rather than only first attempts, the figure is 83% across 82 sittings here, against 66% statewide. First attempts are the fairer comparison — counting resits measures how many tries people needed rather than how many passed, and it penalises a school whose graduates keep going.
Recorded by the Board as Sofia University, San Jose. Its list is kept by institution and its names lag: a school that has since renamed appears under the name it had when the candidates sat.
What this number is, and what it is not
It describes candidates, not teaching. In 2022 the Council on Social Work Education removed licensing-exam pass rates from its accreditation standards, saying the data “may not be an equitable measure of program outcomes” — after the social-work exam board’s own analysis found first-time pass rates of 84% for white candidates and 45% for Black candidates. A program that enrolls more career-changers and more students of color will post a lower rate while teaching at least as well. The accrediting body with the most reason to want this metric examined it and stopped using it.
The denominator is not this year’s students. These are people who sat the exam during the window, often several years after graduating and sometimes after the program changed shape or owner.
It is published here because it is a real, official figure that is otherwise almost impossible to find — and it is published on this page only. There is no pass-rate column in the directory, nothing is sorted by it, and no school on this site is ranked against another.

What to ask before you apply
None of these are answered on a program page, and all five change what the degree is actually worth to you.
The single question that separates programs. Ask for a list of current sites, and ask plainly whether the program places you or expects you to find your own. A rural or online student unable to find a site cannot graduate.
The Board publishes this by school, so the program cannot be the only source. Ask anyway, and see whether the answer matches.
Per-unit rates move. Multiply by the actual unit count and add campus fees before comparing anything.
The 500 couples-and-families hours are carved out of the 1,750 clinical ones, and they are the category associates most often finish short on. A program placing students in adult individual settings will not generate them.
Sometimes yes, sometimes with extra units, sometimes only in one delivery format. Get it in writing rather than from a brochure.
What I could not establish
Everything above is sourced. These are the things I looked for and could not establish - take them to admissions, and note how quickly and precisely they answer.
- No term-by-term course sequence is published anywhere. The catalog lists requirements only as unit blocks (Transpersonal Arc, Introductory / Intermediate / Advanced Clinical, Capstone Practicum), so the 'terms' above are those blocks, not quarters.
- Admissions prerequisites for the MACP specifically — GPA minimum, prerequisite coursework, essay and recommendation requirements, whether there is an interview — are not published on either the catalog program page or the university admissions page. Only application deadlines and fee-payment dates were found. The general 'Graduate Application Requirements' link on sofia.edu did not resolve to a requirements list.
- The BPPE fact sheet reports a 0% job placement rate for the online MACP in both 2023 and 2024, with 0 graduates recorded as employed in the field out of 18 and 19 available. That is almost certainly a follow-up/reporting failure rather than a real outcome, but the filing gives no explanation, so it is reported here as-is rather than interpreted away.
- Two figures for total units are in circulation: the catalog says 90.0–97.5 units, while the marketing program page says 90–94.5 and cites the 2020–2021 catalog for its clinical-core listing. The catalog figure is the one used here.
- Sofia now operates a second campus in Costa Mesa (3333 Harbor Blvd) alongside Palo Alto. Which campus the MACP in-person intensive is held at is not stated on the MACP pages; the catalog says only 'on campus'.
- No Reddit, Student Doctor Network or GradCafe discussion of Sofia's MACP could be located, and Reddit was in any case unreachable from this environment (HTTP 403 across all endpoints and mirrors tried). All voices here come from OnlineU reviews and the BPPE filing.
- The strongest reviews are from 2013 and the harshest from 2019 and 2021. Nothing more recent than 2021 was found, so the current state of the administrative problems described is unknown.
