What this program actually is

Vanguard's M.S. in Clinical Psychology is organized as a survey of therapeutic modalities rather than around a single house theory, and the required list makes that unusually literal: separate three-unit courses in Psychodynamic Theory and Treatment (PSYG-616), Cognitive-Behavioral Theory and Treatment (PSYG-617), Family Psychotherapy (PSYG-605), Couples Psychotherapy (PSYG-716), Group Psychotherapy (PSYG-717) and Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (PSYG-615). Skills training opens with Client-Centered therapy in PSYG-601 and there is no capstone course forcing you to pick one orientation — the exit requirement is a case presentation. If you want a program with a strong theoretical commitment, this is not it; if you want broad exposure with the four BBS-relevant relational modalities each taught as its own course, it is a clean fit. The degree is 61 semester units, rising to 66 if you add the LPCC coursework, and Vanguard's mechanism for that is unusual: rather than a separate track, three courses carry variable credit and you take the higher value (PSYG-711 at 3 instead of 2, PSYG-720 at 3 instead of 2, plus PSYG-660 Career Development at 3).

The Christian question here has a precise answer. Exactly one course, PSYG-712 Psychology, Theology and Spirituality, carries the faith content — three units of sixty-one — and it is backed by a stated program learning outcome, "Demonstrate and apply the integration of faith in the psychotherapeutic process." There is no Bible, theology or ministry requirement, no doctrinal statement in the admissions checklist, and the remaining sixty courses read as conventional clinical training. The identity is institutional and explicit — the mission statement is to equip students "to serve with excellence as Christian mental health professionals," and the department describes itself as grounded in "a Christian understanding of God, human nature, families, relationships, and God's redeeming compassion for humankind" — but as a curriculum component it is one required course.

Two structural things matter more than the branding. First, Vanguard runs its own clinic, Journeys at Vanguard, opened on the Costa Mesa campus in March 2022 on a sliding-scale, nobody-turned-away model, staffed by graduate students under licensed supervision — one of a small number of California MFT-track master's programs with an in-house community clinic. Second, and less flattering: practicum starts late. On every published track — two-year, three-year, four-year — the practicum course first appears in the summer of year two, and the graduation bar is 225 clinical hours with a minimum of 150 face-to-face client contact hours, the lowest published requirement of the Christian-institution programs in this set. Offsetting that, the personal-therapy requirement is one of the heaviest in California: 30 sessions, begun within your first semester and running concurrent with coursework.

Every California program teaches law and ethics, assessment and a survey of theories. These are the courses that are not on every list — the ones that tell you what this particular faculty believes therapy is. The quoted text is the catalog’s own; the note underneath each one is mine.

The whole degree, term by term

What you would actually take, in the order you would take it. Sequences change; check the current catalog before you count on any single term.

One 61-unit degree with two delivery formats that Vanguard treats as separate cohorts: on-campus courses run 16 weeks (a 3-unit course is one three-hour meeting a week), online courses run 8 weeks (a 3-unit course is one two-hour live meeting a week) except practicum-related courses, which stay 16 weeks in both. The online track is open only to California residents and carries three mandatory on-campus weekends — Orientation Weekend, the Current Topics course in the first summer, and Group Psychotherapy over an extended weekend in the final spring. "On campus and Online tracks are separate and students on each track are guaranteed priority registration in their format"; switching needs program permission and space. Both formats lead to the same degree and the same BBS statement, so both are CA MFT-eligible. Tracks of 2, 3 and 4 years exist (the 2-year is accelerated and needs department approval); the 3-year track below is the one Vanguard calls most popular. How practicum actually works

Californian clinical training runs in two legally distinct stages, and the difference decides what a program can and cannot do for you.

A trainee is a student. You see clients while still enrolled, at a site your program approves, supervised by someone the site provides. This is practicum, and it is the stage a program controls. An associate — registered with the Board after you graduate — is no longer a student, is usually paid, and is working toward the 3,000 hours the license requires. The Board renamed this stage from “intern” to “associate” in 2018, so any page still saying “MFT intern” is quoting something out of date.

Hours you bank as a trainee count toward the 3,000, up to a limit, which is why the size and quality of a program’s placement matters long after graduation: a student who leaves with 1,000 hours starts the associate years a third of the way through them, and one who leaves with the 225-hour minimum starts at the beginning.

Practicum is also where a degree most often stops being on schedule. Coursework runs on a calendar the school controls; placement does not. The questions that matter are therefore all about who owns the problem of finding you a site — and the answer differs enormously between programs on this list.

The school runs its own training clinic.  Journeys at Vanguard Owning a clinic and holding a seat in it are different things, so this sits beside the model above rather than replacing it.

Clinical contact starts long before practicum does. In your first semester PSYG-601 puts you in supervised practice sessions with Vanguard undergraduate volunteers, and the catalog says that experience "will be used in assessing eligibility for trainee status" — so semester one is functionally a screening for whether you are allowed to see clients at all. Actual placement begins in the summer of year two and is governed by a hard rule: "in compliance with state requirements, students must be concurrently enrolled in a practicum course (PSYG-626 Professional Skills in Clinical Practice, PSYG-726 Case Conceptualization or PSYG-727 Practicum) while gaining clinical hours," so you cannot bank hours in a gap term. Sites can be community counseling centers, college counseling centers or substance-abuse treatment programs, and one of them is the school's own — Journeys at Vanguard, opened in March 2022 on a sliding-scale model where clients pay what they can and, in the founding director's words, "no person is turned away"; graduate students staff it under licensed supervision. Placement is collaborative rather than assigned: Vanguard says "the program will support and assist you in securing a placement at one of our more than 60 partner sites," which means you apply and interview, with a curated list and staff help. The graduation bar of 225 hours / 150 face-to-face is modest, and Vanguard is candid that the payoff differs by license — MFT trainee hours "may also be applied to licensing requirements... in the state of California," while for LPCC "hours of experience gained as a student are not applied to licensing requirements," so an LPCC-bound student starts the clock at zero on graduation day. How its graduates did on the Board’s exam

Counting every attempt rather than only first attempts, the figure is 78% across 157 sittings here, against 66% statewide. First attempts are the fairer comparison — counting resits measures how many tries people needed rather than how many passed, and it penalises a school whose graduates keep going.

On the separate California Law and Ethics exam, 88% of this school’s 145 first-time candidates passed, against 80% statewide.

None of these are answered on a program page, and all five change what the degree is actually worth to you.

What I could not establish

Everything above is sourced. These are the things I looked for and could not establish - take them to admissions, and note how quickly and precisely they answer.

• No freely-licensed photograph of the Vanguard University campus exists on Wikimedia Commons — the only Vanguard files there are logos. Rather than hotlink a copyrighted university image, photo is null.
• No independent student discussion of this program was found on Reddit, Student Doctor Network or GradCafe, so there are no genuine outside voices. Vanguard's own alumni testimonials were the only student-perspective material available and are not reproduced as if they were independent.
• No relational (couples/family) client-hour sub-minimum is published — only the 225 total / 150 face-to-face figures.
• Supervision mechanics are not published: individual vs group supervision ratios, weekly supervision hours, and whether sessions are recorded, live-observed or observed through a one-way mirror are all absent from the public catalog and program pages. The only stated structure is concurrent enrollment in a practicum course.
• Journeys at Vanguard's role in the practicum system is not quantified anywhere public — how many of the cohort place there versus at outside sites, and whether it is a first placement or an option among the 60+ partner sites, is not stated.
• Vanguard points readers to the BBS website for licensing-exam pass rates rather than publishing its own.
• The catalog used is the 2025/26 edition; a 2026/27 edition was not published at the catalog.vanguard.edu path at the time of research.
